At least once a week I get a message from Facebook, email, or a reply on one of my videos asking me, “Paul, what kind of rod and reel are you using in this video?” So, I decided to write about the equipment I use to catch crappie. Today we will be going over the rod and reel I use, and what I like about each one.
First thing’s first, the fishing rod! You must have a good fishing rod if you want to crappie fish successfully. The type of rod I like to use is graphite, between ultra-light and medium, and slow to medium action. A graphite rod is going to be very light, it also will allow you to feel even the slightest thump/bite from a crappie. The slow to medium action is going to allow you to set the hook without pulling it straight out of the crappies mouth (hence the term, papermouth). The rod I choose most of the time is a B’n’M Duck Commander ULTRALITE. What I like about this rod, it’s light, very sensitive, and has a great bend to it which allows me to set the hook without fear of ripping the hook out of the mouth and through the crappies lips.
Second, the reel! I chose to talk about the reel second because I truly believe the fishing rod is so much more important! Especially when it comes to crappie fishing. So many times, I have seen people try to crappie fish with a bass rod and struggle to catch crappie because they can’t even feel the bite. Not to say the reel is unimportant, in my opinion, it’s just not as important. However, I do like to use SMOOTH reels. Which is why, I use the Pflueger PRESSP30X President. This reel is exceptionally smooth AND, I still have Pflueger reels today that are 4 years old that are still operating smoothly and efficiently!! They are a great quality product that will last. If you buy one of these reels, you will not regret it.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with the B’n’M Duck Commander and the Pflueger President reel. The durability and strength of the B’n’M rod is more than capable of helping you land that big crappie in the boat. With the Pflueger reel, you will have no problems reeling in that big crappie.
